Wear comfortable attire for tap dancing. Tights and leotards are NOT required. You want to present yourself in a neat and easy-t0-watch manner. Shorts or leggings in a solid color, T-shirt or tank top that is appropriate in a solid color with no words. Hair should be neat and pulled back.
What kind of tap shoes should I wear?
There is no required brand or style of shoe for DTR. Wear whatever tap shoes you have!
Will DTR interfere with my studio competitions?
No, DTR will not interfere with your studio's competition schedule. We understand that your studio dance comes first and we lighten the practice schedule during the competition season. Many of our company members are from highly competitive studios. In fact, we like to support each other so if you become a member, you might see a group of us in the audience to cheer you on!
What is the practice schedule?
We practice on Sundays. The times vary and are typically 3 to 6 hours between 10am and 6pm, depending on your level.
What is the financial commitment?
Dues are minimal paid in the beginning of the year. You will also be required to purchase a team jacket and jersey. Guest choreography will take place and cost will be included in your initial fee. We bring in world-class tap choreographers (many are working professionals from Broadway, film, TV) to create a piece for each age group. There will be optional costs for logo merchandise and master classes (again these are not required).
What is the level of commitment if I make the company?
Our goal is to provide a fun, no-pressure environment. We do want to see you at weekly practices but understand if you have to miss from time to time. 1 rehearsal a month will be required to stay in good standing. All performances are optional. If you decide to participate in a performance, there will be mandatory practices for that performance. If you can't make the practice schedule for that performance, you will not be able to participate. Of course we want to know that you want to be here so if you stop showing up and communicating with us, you will be removed from the company roster. More official rules will be provided to all members at the mandatory company meeting on Sunday, September 15th, held in the Metro Detroit area.
What is the busiest time of the season for DTR?
Our busiest time is during the summer when we prepare for our performances at the Motor City Tap Festival (MCTF) and the annual Motor City Soles. This is a very special time for us as we welcome tap dancers from across the country to Detroit and get the opportunity to show our DTR talent to the festival's attendees and world-class faculty. We also serve as ambassadors for Detroit and represent the DTR legacy so it is important that we look our best. In order to perform, you will be required to learn choreography and attend two mandatory practices held prior to MCTF.
Is travel required?
No. You are not required to travel. The company does offer several opportunities for classes and performances across the country, but they are completely optional. We have performed in cities such as New York City, Chicago, Phoenix, St. Louis, etc, as well as all over Michigan. We are always looking for more opportunities.
